TRUMPET TUNING

What does it mean to “tune” my instrument?

Simply put, getting your instrument set to the correct length so that it is possible to play all notes in tune. This setting does not mean that all notes are now in tune. This just ensures your instrument length is not causing tuning issues.

Steps to Tuning:

  1. Breathing Exercises

  2. Equipment Check

  3. Mouthpiece Sounds (with reference audio if possible)

  4. Long Tones (without & with reference audio)

  5. Tuning Procedure

Step 1

breathing exercises

2 Min.

Step 2

Equipment Check

15 Sec.

It is always good to be sure your instrument is generally set in the correct position / length before playing every day.

Check the following:

  • Main Tuning Slide Length (typically pulled out ~3/4 inch)

  • 1st Valve Slide Length & Movement

  • 2nd Valve Slide Length (likely pushed in all the way)

  • 3rd Valve Slide Length & Movement
